Peru Fast Facts Header

48% of women work in the informal sector without benefits.

15% of rural girls drop out of primary school every year.

5.2% of women may lack any form of identification—birth certificate or identity card—which excludes them from the system, i.e., access to education, health, justice, employment, and credit services, and limits their ability to exercise rights.

USAID/Peru supports human rights activities with a gender focus.

Psychological Services to Victims of Torture

USAID supports the provision of psychological services to both women and men who have been victims of torture. A USAID-supported local NGO provides treatment to improve the mental health of those affected by the two decades of political violence in Peru. Women exceed men as the primary beneficiaries. In addition, the issue of trafficking in persons has risen in prominence, and the Mission is supporting the development and implementation of a tracking system that will help the police identify and follow cases, most of which involve women.

Human Rights Protection

As part of a multi-donor effort, USAID promotes the economic and social development of the Peru-Ecuador border region to provide tangible benefits from the October 1998 Peace Accords signed by the two countries. Women are part of all capacity building efforts, and USAID is working specifically to protect the human rights of women and indigenous people in the region. In 2003, an additional 340 new human rights promoters were trained in issues of gender, equity, diversity, bilingual-intercultural relations, domestic violence, women's identification, and conflict resolution.
