15% of rural girls drop out of primary school every year.

Rural women participate in creating their community’s health development plan.

Despite a period of transition and political conflict in the Peruvian health sector, USAID has been able to play a constructive role and build credibility as a trustworthy and effective partner with a range of health-oriented organizations, both public and private. USAID works to improve health by providing information on hygiene, sexual behavior, and nutrition at schools, supporting media campaigns promoting health and hygiene, helping upgrade medical facilities, and monitoring delivery of services to ensure informed choice, and strengthening health system performance. Over 200,000 poor rural women have changed important health and reproductive health behaviors, including use of skilled birth attendants and acceptance of family planning, as a result of these efforts, and three USAID-supported NGOs inaugurated new primary health care centers using income generated from USAID-funded activities. USAID's partners include the Peruvian Ministry of Health, PRISMA-a local NGO, and UNICEF among others.

Radionovelas

As part of its health activities in 2003, USAID supported the production and broadcast of "radionovelas" (radio soap operas) addressing a range of health issues and targeting an audience of 20-35 year old women in Ancash, Ayacucho, Huancavelica, La Libertad, and Puno. An estimated 1.5 million women listen to the programs.
