The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste is a new country. It gained its independence from Indonesia and ratified its Constitution in 2002. East Timor held its first elections in September 2001 and elected 24 women to the Constituent Assembly. Today women constitute 25% of the Assembly.

Twice as many women die in childbirth in East Timor than anywhere else in the Western Pacific or East Asia. Some 200 midwives serve a population of 924,642 (2004 national census).

USAID/East Timor supports health intiatives through the following activity:

Health Care Services (Cooperative Café Timor)

USAID's organic coffee cultivators' federation offers basic health care services to coffee cooperative members and their families. The project's 11 health clinics, 25 mobile units, and 70 Timorese medical personnel treated over 30,000 patients, half of whom were women, in a four month period in 2001. During the month of May 2004 alone, the clinic treated 21,000 patients. This is an important model for future health programs.
