Almost 24% of women are married before age 15, many of them forced into polygamous marriages.

Country Snapshot: Mali and Ambassador’s Girls’ Scholarship Program

The current U.S. Ambassador to Mali, Vicki Huddleston, and USAID proposed a girls’ scholarship program for the nomadic population in north Mali. A $6 million fund will support 7,086 school girls with student-teacher scholarships and tutoring each year for five years.

The geographic focus of this program is in the underdeveloped Timbaktu, Kidal and Gao areas of northern Mali.
