This document reports on activities in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda during the second year of the USAID grant "Advancing Women's Rights Globally." Under this grant, Georgetown University Law Center's International Women's Human Rights Clinic and its four partners (LAWA-Ghana, WRAPA, WLAC, and LAW-Uganda) work on various projects to advance women's rights and fight discrimination, including legislation, litigation, strengthening civil society, and public education.  Gender, Agriculture, and Climate Change: A Regional Analysis for East Africa 11/30/2010 (871KB)
This report reviews the gender implications of the activities of the USAID/East Africa Regional Economic Growth and Integration program, with particular reference to the Feed the Future and climate change initiatives. In East Africa, there is a need to incorporate gender dimensions into local, national, and regional climate change programs and discussions. It is commonly recognized that the poor and marginalized will experience the impacts of climate change most acutely and that they have the least capacity to adapt, and that women and girls make up a disproportionate number of the poor or marginalized.

This gender assessment presents a synthesis of the performance assessment findings for IEHA agricultural investments in sub-Saharan Africa and their ability to address gender constraints and increase the impact of agricultural programs for women, as well as men. It captures best practices and lessons learned and offers evidence-based recommendations on gender integration in order to maximize future agricultural investments toward the goals of rural poverty reduction and food security. Although largely funded by AFR/SD and EGAT/AG, it represents a broader collaboration of offices including EGAT/ESP and EGAT/WID, and organizations including the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

The workshops, held in Accra, Pretoria, and Addis Ababa in 2004, emphasized the economic growth, agriculture, and trade sectors. This manual has been designed to guide trainers in conducting workshops for religious leaders and women leaders of faith on GBV and HIV. It was created specifically for heads of religious organizations, such as inter-religious councils and women's religious organizations. While this material was piloted with leaders, it can be adapted to meet the specific priorities and needs of participants, such as other organization members. The overall objectives of the training are to raise the awareness of religious leaders and women leaders of faith about GBV as it relates to HIV and to motivate them to address the issues in their own organizations or communities.

This is the final report of the Women's Legal Rights Initiative (WLR). The WLR worked to advance the legal, civil, property, and human rights of women in 10 developing countries: Albania, Benin, Guatemala, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, and Swaziland. It was implemented from 2002 to 2007 by Chemonics International in partnership with the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), MetaMetrics, Inc., and Partners of the Americas.

Since 2003, the Africa Bureau has funded programs in twelve countries: Benin, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda, and West Africa. In partnership with the Africa Bureau and the USAID Missions in Africa, the Office of Women in Development has funded anti-trafficking programs in Madagascar, Mali, Uganda, and West Africa. This report serves as a desk review of these programs and a synthesis of the lessons learned and best practices to help guide future USAID programming in the region.

This final report of the African Women Leaders in Agriculture and the Environment (AWLAE) program provides an overview of the activities implemented and results achieved under the program. The goal of the program was to increase the participation and leadership of African women at all levels of agricultural and environmental activity. The program focused on helping professional women advance so that they might become stronger advocates for policies and programs that benefit women farmers.

This paper synthesizes and summarizes the proceedings of the EGAT/WID NGO Small Grants Program's "Conference on Women's Property and Inheritance Rights," which was held in June 2002 in Nairobi, Kenya. At the conference, representatives of NGOs that had received funding to support their efforts to strengthen women's property and inheritance rights discussed the goals, structures, and outcomes of their work. The NGO grantees had been active in Africa (Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, and Tanzania) and Asia (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka).
