Women in Peace-Building

Supporting Women's Engagement in Peace-Building in Uganda

Supporting Women's Engagement in Peace-Building is a two year project implemented by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Karamoja, Uganda to build local capacity to implement UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1820 and the Goma Council Resolution on Inclusion in Peace Building Processes.  The project develops and increases women's leadership in local peace committees and helps them to develop local action plans to implement those resolutions, consistent with the Government of Uganda's National Action Plan in support of 1325, 1820, and the Goma Council Resolution (1.3MB PDF).

Using behavior change approaches, the project facilitates discussions within peace committees about power dynamics between men and women that contribute to violence against women and their exclusion from peace-building processes. Project activities implement the Start, Awareness, Support Action (SASA!) process and facilitate structural change within peace committees to best implement the Ugandan National Action Plan.

For more information about the IRC's work in Uganda, read its blog post on Giving Peace a Chance in Karamoja.

Image of Secretary Clinton: "The only way to achieve our goals – to reduce the number of conflicts around the world, to eliminate rape as a weapon of war, to combat the culture of impunity for sexual violence, to build sustainable peace – is to draw on the full contributions of both women and men in every aspect of peacemaking, peacekeeping, and peace building."
