USAID/Rwanda
The mission marked International Women's Day throughout the week of March 7-11 by offering a series of lunchtime presentations on issues important to women, with the goal of reaching out to the Rwandan staff and their wives. U.S. Ambassador Stuart Symington asked attendees to act as "Ambassadors of Good Health" for others. Presentation topics included women's reproductive health, money management, gender-based violence, and women's self defense. In the self defense class, women were taught simple strikes and how to break out of wrist- and choke-holds. They were excited to learn about these tactics, and to discover how easy they were. Some men had expressed interest in attending the class but were encouraged not to do so. It seemed like they were very curious to know what women were being taught as self-defense strategies!
