One Woman Initiative - The International Women's Empowerment Fund

photo of Carly Fiorina speaking at the launch of the One women Initiative.

The One Woman Initiative: The International Women's Empowerment Fund for Justice, Opportunity, and Leadership, was publicly announced on May 12, 2008, by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Carly Fiorina, CEO of Carly Fiorina Enterprises and former CEO of Hewlett Packard. The Fund was established in recognition of the fact that when one woman is empowered, the world benefits. When a woman is granted access to information, training, micro-lending, technology, or rights advocacy, she can lift up her entire family, if not her community.

The Fund is a public-private partnership that will mobilize $100 million in its first five years to empower women to make a difference locally and globally. Carly Fiorina serves as the Fund Chair. Co-chairs include: Sheila Johnson, co-founder of Black Entertainment Television; Farooq Kathwari, CEO of Ethan Allen; and Pat Mitchell, CEO of The Paley Center for Media and former CEO of the Public Broadcasting Service. The Fund will support existing initiatives in countries with significant Muslim populations.

USAID's contribution to the Fund is through its current and planned women's empowerment projects supporting women's political leadership, economic opportunity, and justice. USAID funding will attract additional private sector contributions to support many more women in realizing their potential for change.
