Program Description

As part of the U.S. Mission to Uganda's assistance effort in Uganda, USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) began a program in June 2008 after security improvements in areas that suffered during a decades-long conflict provided hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people with a chance to return to their homes and communities. The progress led to a new focus by both the Government of Uganda and the international community on providing a path to post-conflict development. OTI partnered with government departments and offices to support small-scale renovations of schools, health centers, government office buildings, and other infrastructure that enable local government to provide basic social services and support economic growth and recovery.

After three years of operation, OTI officially concluded its Northern Uganda Transition Initiative (NUTI), programming approximately $14 million through 280 grants to support the voluntary return of displaced citizens in northern Uganda and promote peace, recovery, and development. Overall, program activities provided citizens with visible signs that peace is taking hold and that the government is at the helm of the reconstruction process responding to community needs.
