USAID/OTI YES program in Liberia Fact Sheet
June 2006
Basic Facts about the Youth Education for Life Skills (YES) Program
- YES is a post-war community intervention program designed to help Liberians reintegrate into their communities in a constructive manner, thereby contributing to lasting peace in Liberia.
- The YES program provides 30,000 youth, between the ages of 18 to 30, with life skills training that help them make responsible and informed decisions for themselves, their families, and their communities in the aftermath of 14 years of violent war.
- The YES program teaches basic literacy and numeracy, and provides instruction in essential skills such as family life, health, conflict prevention, and employment.
- YES undertakes a 5 month training program comprising 7 modules: My Identity, World of Work, Health & Us, Peaceful Living, Good Governance, Our Environment and Next Steps. An abbreviated form of YES, entitled the Community Youth Peace and Education Program (CYPEP) is also being implemented. The curriculum and philosophy of CYPEP is geared more towards urban youth.
- Small grant activities administered by OTI’s implementing partner Creative Associates are coordinated in conjunction with YES communities to enhance YES participatory curriculum requirements. Communities work together with the skills they learned in the YES modules to participate in the coordination of community improvement projects.
- YES does not carry out vocational training and does not employ or pay community youth participants for taking part in the program.
- The two year roll-out of YES and CYPEP is implemented through two cooperative agreements with Mercy Corps and World Vision and is scheduled to end on December 31, 2006.
