Program Description
In July 2009, USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) launched a country program in Afghanistan to support the U.S. Government's stabilization and reconstruction initiatives. A new part of this effort is to bring stability to violence-prone areas of the country. The objective of the Afghanistan Stabilization Initiative (ASI) is to address instability by fostering and strengthening conditions that build links between the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (GIRoA) and local Afghan communities. In close coordination with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the OTI program has increasingly supported communities in violence-prone areas where stabilization projects are needed most. These efforts have focused on cultivating a positive economic and social environment within traditional community leadership structures. In addition, ASI supports GIRoA by providing increased public access to information about its social, economic, and political activities and policies.
