ASHA has awarded grants to assist private institutions in the Near East since 1959 and continues to support many institutions in this region today. To date, ASHA has awarded approximately $471 million in assistance to various institutions in this region.
The primary objective of ASHA grants is to strengthen the capacity of these institutions to demonstrate American advances in educational and medical technology and practices in the areas of research, training and patient care. ASHA assisted institutions in this region have contributed to the business, scientific and medical infrastructures of many countries in the region. The impact of these projects has increased the number and quality of institutions of higher learning, hospitals and clinics in the Near East. The grants have also contributed to improvements in the socioeconomic livelihoods of the communities served and increased mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the Near East.

The educational institutions in this region provide academic training at the high school, undergraduate and graduate levels.
These institutions offer a varied curriculum, including baccalaureate degrees in English, the liberal arts, accounting, business administration, education and nursing.
