Seminar 5: Migration, Marginal Lands and Least-Favored Areas

A rare storm in the Sahel of sub-saharan Africa.

Kevin O’Neil from the Migration Policy Institute and John Pender from the International Food Policy Research Institute addressed the links between environment and migration, and the role of remittances in natural resource management investment and poverty reduction. Their presentations looked at the links and disconnects between development assistance and humanitarian assistance in fighting poverty and sustaining the resource base, as well as “creating natural capital” by transforming marginal lands into financially viable investments for the rural poor. The seminar also looked at the demographics of the rural poor who live on marginal lands, and explored their differing livelihoods and coping strategies. An open discussion on themes presented in the seminar followed the presentations.
