Mapping Our Work - GIS and USAID/MaliUSAID/Mali GIS logo

GIS(Geographic Information Systems) are being utilized in almost every field and industry in today's technological age. The value of being able to visualize data geospatially, to visualize work done, to visualize the various features of our environmental and to see the spatial relationships between these things is invaluable to proper planning, collaboration, assessment and the analysis thereof which can lead to innovative solutions. GIS has proven to be an essential tool in every field of work. It's power grows more and more everday and the demand for GIS professionals is constantly on the rise.

USAID/Mali aspires to be a model mission for cutting edge development methodologies and tools. USAID/Mali is focused on utilizing the power of GIS mapping to help achieve our development goals and objectives and to help us to better coordinate our work with the GOM(Government of Mali). We believe that spatial analysis of our activities can help us in the planning stages of all our work in Mali. GIS can also be a useful tool for collaboration between our various partners. We are currently utilizing GIS/geospatial technologies as an essential strategic tool to help our mission to better plan and achieve our development goals.

A map of all USAID/Mali partner activities by Communes

This is a map showing concentration of presence of our various USAID/Mali partners throughout the country of Mali broken down by commune. The more partners working in a particular commune the darker blue the commune has been shaded. We have 11 national coverage programs from various partners that have an impact/coverage accross every commune in Mali. Above and beyond that we have partners that focus their activities in one or more communes throughout the country. From this map we can see where USAID/Mali partners are most active throughout the country. Generally, it appears that USAID/Mali is most active in the regions of Sikasso, Mopti and the Northern Regions (Gao, Tombouctou, Kidal). We have also overlayed the "166 Most Vulnerable Communes" determined by the GOM (Government of Mali) onto the map for comparison purposes. This can help give us guidance as to whether USAID/Mali activity coverage areas are in line with the GOM's own development priorities. Most of the 166 Vulnerable Communes are in the Northern regions and also the NorthWestern area of mali. USAID/Mali seems to be overlapping its activities well with the 166 Vulnerable Communes generally but there are some areas where the overlap is not so strong. For example, the communes of Dilly, Boron and Massantola in the Koulikoro region of Mali have a population of over 30,000 people and are identified by the GOM as within the 166 Most Vulnerable Communes, yet USAID/Mali has relatively few partners active in these communes. Also, the commune of Bamba in the Northern region of Gao has a population of over 30,000 people and is part of the 166 Most Vulnerable Communes but has a relatively low USAID/Mali partner presence. This type of map can help to serve to identify possible communes of interest for future development projects for USAID/Mali partners. It can also serve as a wonderful planning and collaboration tool for our various partners so that we can all work together in a more complimentary way to meet our overall development goals for Mali.
