Agriculture

By investing in agriculture in the Middle East, USAID is fighting rural poverty, increasing environmental sustainability, and improving the quality of life in rural areas.

USAID programming in democracy and governance supports opportunities for democratic reform in Egypt, Tunisia, and neighboring countries; helps improve governance and expand political space; and assists in combating corruption and bolstering democratic institutions.

Economic Growth

Unemployment and underemployment have been major factors driving the uprisings against governments in the Middle East and North Africa. Over one-fourth of young people in the region are unemployed, largely the result of slow economic growth and policies favoring elites. USAID's economic growth programs in the region work to address these problems.

Population, Health, and Nutrition

To help improve health and well-being in the Middle East and North Africa, USAID programs strengthen health systems; provide essential training on maternal and child health, family planning, and infectious disease prevention; and assist with the procurement and management of health supplies.

Water

USAID works with communities and local partners to address water-related issues and challenges throughout the region such as improving water-use efficiency through technology and better management, ensuring low-cost and effective treatment of wastewater, and increasing water access. These challenges are compounded by global climate change.
