USAID, the U.S. Department of State, and the Organization of American States (OAS) are pleased to invite you to a conference on:

Successful Models and Approaches on
Youth Development and Crime Prevention

June 28th, 2011
OAS Headquarters, Hall of the Americas, Washington, D.C.

The conference follows the OAS General Assembly on Citizen Security (June 5-8) and the SICA donor conference (June 22); and will bring together young people, USG agencies, donors, regional and international practitioners, & local partners to discuss the following topics:

  • Successful approaches to community policing
  • Public-private sector alliances in crime prevention
  • Juvenile justice reform
  • Media and youth movements
USAID will present recently completed white papers on crime prevention initiatives in Central America and invite experts from across the hemisphere to comment on the papers, share experiences on what is working and what isn't, and offer insights into various strategies for strengthening US government programs.

The conference will take place at the OAS headquarters, Hall of the Americas on June 28, 2011.

The International Youth Foundation, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development, U.S. State Department, and the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank, is hosting a two-day Youth-Partnerships-Employability Workshop from June 21-22, 2011 in Washington DC. Over the course of the two days, topics that we will explore include:

  • the role of partnerships in enabling youth to overcome barriers to gain an education and find decent work;
  • the strategies for scaling up innovative practices so that more young people can benefit from training opportunities and services; and,
  • the ways to measure program impact in addressing youth employability and exclusion; and how to use data to build greater support for such programs.

June 28: Preventing Youth Crime in the Americas - Successful Models and Approaches (USAID-State-OAS), Hall of the Americas, OAS HQ (17th & Constitution, WDC).

June 30: Launch of USAID-OAS Youth Empowerment/ Crime Prevention Program

The USAID/OAS-hosted event will bring together government officials from the U.S. and the LAC region, as well as development/crime prevention experts, to learn more about this joint project to harness youth energy and creativity to prevent crime, "Armando Paz." USAID will present the genesis of Armando Paz as part of the CARSI regional program, and the importance of using social media to bring young people of different backgrounds together to build peace.

The OAS will then present the various tools used in the program and explain the programmatic approach.
