USAID's Office of Disaster Assistance - An Early Responder to the Crisis

Hunter, a seven-year-old male Border Collie and his handler, Bill Monahans pose with USAID/Dominican Republic communications specialist, Norma Paredes at the airport in Santo Domingo as they prepare to return to Los Angeles.  Monahans and Hunter are part of the Los Angeles County heavy urban search and rescue (USAR) team that was deployed through USAID's Office of Disaster Assistance's (OFDA) Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART).  USAR teams from Fairfax County, VA and Los Angeles County, CA each composed of approximately 72 personnel, six search and rescue dogs, and up to 48 tons of rescue equipment were deployed with USAID/DART along with teams from Miami, Miami-Dade, Virginia Beach, and New York and numerous other countries.  To learn more, click on http://www.usaid.gov/helphaiti/
