The Speaker of the National Assembly, Prof.dr Slavica Djukić Dejanović and the Acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, Michael Harvey officially opened the Assembly’s annual Internship Program with an event in the National Assembly building on May 11, 2010.

In December, 2009, USAID implementing partner the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the National Assembly of Serbia signed a Memorandum of Cooperation that includes a Parliamentary Internship Program for university students in their final year of study. The purpose of these internships is to provide students with public service experience, while supporting the Assembly with additional support staff.

NDI and the Human Resource office of the Assembly selected twenty-four interns from a pool of over 300 applicants who will work with Assembly Members on various committees, caucuses, administrative departments and the Speaker’s office. This non-partisan program is conducted in co-operation with the HR department and the Assembly Resource Center.
Interns will work in an office or committee that best matches their interests, skills and the needs of the Assembly.  This program is intended to provide social science students with the opportunity to learn about Parliamentary responsibilities, functions and practices.

“These Assembly Internships are an important piece in the continuing development of the National Assembly as a democratic institution,” said Mike Harvey. “It brings in a new generation of talented young people, many who come from outside of political circles, who will contribute their time and talents as they learn how the Assembly functions. It also provides MPs and staff an opportunity to mentor young people who may sometime in the future choose a career in public service,” Harvey said.
