Partnership for Change

USAID began to implement assistance programs in the Czech republic in 1990 on the heels of the 1989 Velvet Revolution, which peacefully brought forty years of communist rule to an end. With a Support for East European Democracy (SEED) Act investment of almost $135 million in grant assistance and $34 million in loan guarantees, USAID programs were able to assist in the accomplishment of major economic, democratic and social reforms.

This report identifies the major successes of USAID activities in several areas, including privatization, support for private sector growth, financial sector assistance, municipal infrastructure finance, democracy and quality of life.

The success of these programs sets an important precedent for other nations in transition throughout the region.
