U.S. Pledges $500,000 in Assistance to Indonesian Victims Of Explosion
U.S. EMBASSY PRESS RELEASE
PUBLIC AFFAIRS
SECTION
August 7, 2003
The United States is pledging $500,000 in assistance to the victims and their families of the August 5 bomb attack on the J.W. Marriott hotel in Jakarta, in an effort to help Indonesia recover from the event, U.S. Ambassador Ralph L. Boyce announced today.
“Our assistance will prioritize direct help to families and victims impacted by the tragedy, emergency medical capacity, and emergency preparedness training and supplies,” Ambassador Boyce said.
Condemning the attack, Ambassador Boyce said, "The people of Indonesia were attacked in a brutal and senseless fashion on August 5 here in Jakarta. The United States Government joins with Indonesia and the world in condemning this bombing in the strongest possible terms. It is incumbent upon us all to work together to ensure that every possible means is used to combat the scourge of terrorism wherever it exists. The United States has directly felt the pain of terrorism on our shores, and our sympathies are with all of those who lost loved ones or were injured in this horrific crime.”
In addition to directly helping victims, the assistance will also go to those organizations of first response that have the task of providing support in crisis situations.
