Overview
USAID's assistance in Thailand, implemented through the Regional Development Mission for Asia in Bangkok (RDMA), supports regional, transnational, and bilateral programs. These programs include work on the responsible use of natural resources; reduction of the incidence of HIV/AIDS; prevention of human and wildlife trafficking; resolution of political conflict and increased citizen participation in political processes; and the achievement of an integrated Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) community by 2015.
Programs
Peace and Security USAID and the MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) Foundation are continuing their campaign to educate young people about the dangers of being defrauded or coerced into forced labor, servitude, or sexual exploitation. Events are being planned for areas where people are particularly vulnerable to trafficking.
In southern Thailand, USAID supports a variety of initiatives that address the causes and consequences of violent conflict, help people affected by the violence, and support civic education and community media. USAID helps local communities participate in the Thai political system. In northwestern Thailand, USAID is improving conditions for the displaced Burmese population.
Governing Justly and Democratically USAID is working to enhance the role of civil society organizations (CSOs), emphasizing the need to develop cooperative relationships with agencies of the Royal Thai Government. The program aims to enhance the capacity of CSOs, encourage constructive dialogue between citizens and government, and work with both sectors to help mitigate social tension in troubled portions of the country. It supports collaboration between CSOs and the Thai government—particularly independent agencies—to strengthen participatory democracy and increase the role of citizens in governance.
Investing in People: Health and Environment USAID's HIV/AIDS program in Thailand focuses on most-at-risk populations and people living with HIV/AIDS, while developing replicable models for HIV prevention and care. This is accomplished by improving service delivery and program management capabilities of civil society and local non-governmental organizations. USAID also works to help mitigate the spread of avian influenza, malaria, and tuberculosis throughout the region, and assists Thailand in building its research ability in infectious diseases, tracking their spread, and training researchers and caregivers.
USAID supports improved water delivery and wastewater management by bringing leading water utilities in the region and the United States together to share best practices in service delivery. The partnerships have delivered improved quality water to over 150,000 people, with anticipated national scale-up supported by Thai partners. Working with the Thai government, USAID is helping to develop a policy framework to address pollution and the maintenance of treatment facilities.
Investing in People: Environment By sharing innovations through the regional networks and organizations in which Thailand participates, USAID introduces policies, practices, and technologies to address challenges in the following areas: biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, transnational water management, clean water and sanitation, clean energy, and climate change adaptation.
The illegal wildlife trade is damaging ecosystems and threatening species throughout Asia. Wildlife traffickers operate within and across countries, with Thailand often serving as a trans-shipment point. Therefore, USAID supports Thailand’s participation in a regional anti-trafficking network that trains police, customs officials, national park personnel, and the judiciary, and encourages cross-border cooperation.
Economic Growth Thailand's continued progress is in no small part dependent on its ability to enhance trade and technical cooperation with its Southeast Asian neighbors. USAID's support to ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum furthers Thailand's efforts as a leading member of these regional bodies to reduce regional barriers to trade, increase economic growth rates, and improve governance, thus leading to greater regional economic integration and cooperation on issues of mutual interest to the United States and Thailand.
