The Independent State of Papua New Guinea, an island nation located north of Australia in the Pacific Ocean, is a diverse country in terms of both geography and people. The population of 6 million lives primarily in traditional groups practicing subsistence agriculture. USAID programs in the country focus on health and the environment. Over the last 20 years, Papua New Guinea has developed an epidemic of HIV, accounting for 70 percent of the cases in the Pacific region. USAID supports the Government of Papua New Guinea in reducing HIV prevalence in at-risk groups and preventing the further spread of HIV in the general population. USAID also assists the country to conserve its natural resources through regional programs in sustainable forestry and coastal-marine practices.

Investing in People: HIV/AIDS
USAID’s health efforts in Papua New Guinea are focused on improving the capacity, quality, and effectiveness of programs in prevention, care, support, and treatment of most-at-risk populations and people living with HIV/AIDS. USAID works closely with the Government of Papua New Guinea, the U.S. Embassy, and other donors to ensure that available resources to combat HIV/AIDS are strategically coordinated to maximize impact. USAID develops models that can be scaled up by other donors and that contribute to preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS among groups most at risk. In specific regions of the country, USAID is also supporting the implementation of a model that emphasizes continuity of care from prevention to treatment.
Economic Growth: Sustainable Forestry
USAID's Responsible Asia Forestry and Trade program works in Papua New Guinea to promote improved forest management, governance, and legal timber trade as part of a broader regional initiative. As a result of the program, government forest agencies and communities are collaborating to apply sustainable forestry management practices and reduce land use conflicts in more than 15,000 hectares.
Economic Growth: Coral Triangle Initiative
The Coral Triangle in Southeast Asia is the most diverse marine environment in the world, with an estimated half of the world’s coral reefs. USAID is among the U.S. agencies supporting the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), a consortium promoting sustainable fisheries and coastal resource management programs in countries surrounding the Coral Triangle, including Papua New Guinea and six other countries.
In May 2009, leaders of the six Coral Triangle countries endorsed the CTI Regional Plan of Action. Through the CTI, USAID provides assistance to Papua New Guinea and other member countries for the implementation of the Plan of Action, which includes providing access to U.S. science and research capabilities and sharing best practices among the six countries.
