USAID Lebanon: From the American People

PROGRAMS: Economic Growth

Municipal Capacity Building and Service Delivery(MS Word, 976kb)

The program is transforming rural municipalities in over 174 villages into effective agents for leading local socio-economic development through democratic engagement with the private sector and citizenry.  The program improves capacity of municipalities to design and implement socio-economic development programming; broaden stakeholder participation and cooperation in local socio-economic development; and increase economic growth through effective and sustainable public-private partnerships.  USAID’s Assistance to Lebanese Communities around Nahr El Bared and the adjacent areas will help revive their economic livelihoods.

Expanding Economic Opportunities for Survivors of Landmines and Victims of War(MS Word, 298kb)

This is a World Rehabilitation Fund program which USAID/Lebanon has oversight for.  The program goals are to assist the existing cooperative to be sustainable and viable as a stand-alone business, in developing model income generation programs and establishing the cooperative as a legal entity that can support itself both organizationally and financially.  The cooperative's income-generating activities include raising chickens for egg and broiler production, beekeeping for honey and beeswax production, herb cultivation for distillation and goat raising for milk and meat production.  It enables war and landmines survivors to lead more productive and economically independent lives.

Microenterprise Assistance/ Lebanon Investment in Microfinance(MS Word, 132kb)

The program is expanding the supply of loans to individuals, micro-enterprises, and farmers.  With USAID grants, local micro-finance institutions (MFIs) disburse funds as loans and services to micro enterprises that do not normally have access to capital in order to establish new income-generating businesses or enhance existing ones.  Loans are provided to qualified enterprises and farmers working in rural and peri-urban areas in Lebanon and operating within the Agribusiness, Tourism and Information and Communication Technology value chains.

Lebanon Agriculture Product Quality Control and Certification(MS Word, 280kb)

The program is working to expand the availability and quality of accredited and certified laboratories and plants, and the market-oriented services they provide.  The program is upgrading four agricultural products development and testing laboratories in Lebanon to become certified and internationally recognized ‘one-stop-export-shops’.

Support for Lebanon's Accession to the World Trade Organization(MS Word, 88kb)

The program helps Lebanon build linkages to the global economy and expand commercial opportuities for local businesses.  Through the end of the project, efforts are being directed toward assisting the private sector to advocate for trade-related regulatory reform under three objectives: Regulatory Impact Assessments quantifying legal/regulatory barriers to trade; Establishment of Technical Barriers to Trade Enquiry Point at the Lebanese Standards Institution; and Strategic Communications.

Developing Hydroponics to Access International Markets(MS Word, 91kb)

The program will establish a vibrant high-value fruit, vegetables and flowers sector by strengthening hydroponic production and horticulture export market linkages.  Hydroponics offers many agro-technical advantages: it mitigates many climatic constraints like wind and low temperature variations allowing a longer growing season; plant and harvesting dates are more flexible enabling producers to respond better to market opportunities; it avoid problems of soil infection and overuse so that farmers can produce the same crop longer; and it allows more efficient use of water. The main crops that will be produced under the hydroponics project are lettuce, tomatoes, cumbers, capsicum (like green peppers), strawberries and cut flowers.

Reforestation Partnership Program(MS Word, 158kb)

The program aims at enhancing seedling nursery operations and improving reforestation practices. The U.S. Forest Service intends to help counterparts plant several hundred thousand seedlings across Lebanon throughout the next four years, but its lasting contribution will likely be in modernizing nursery and planting protocols that will have benefits for years to come for future generations.  The Initiative will be transitioned into an ongoing and financially sustainable foundation to help ensure long-term high quality forest restoration work in Lebanon.
