PRESS RELEASE

U.S. GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE AMERICAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Beirut, Lebanon

Ambassador Michele J. Sison and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Denise A. Herbol presented a check for $100,000 to the American Community School (ACS) to support student scholarships.  USAID funding to ACS in the past year totals $500,000.

This scholarship funding assisted more than 140 ACS students. This program particularly targets students coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who could not otherwise afford to attend an American institution of learning. The assistance also allowed ACS to purchase software and hardware for the school.

The U.S. Government’s support to ACS reflects the importance the United States accords to education, and its role in promoting a democratic and economically prosperous Lebanon. Since 2002, USAID has provided $2,400,000 in financial aid and support to ACS.

Other institutions benefiting from USAID’s scholarship assistance program are the American University of Beirut (AUB), the Lebanese American University (LAU), Haigazian University and the International College.

USAID has worked in Lebanon since 1951 and implemented development projects to benefit Lebanese citizens. With funds from the American people, USAID creates jobs, invests in youth and protects the environment.  USAID’s work reflects the strong friendship between the Lebanese and American people.
