U.S. PROVIDES TECHNICAL TRAINING FOR NORTH LEBANON WATER ESTABLISHMENT

Monday, November 28, 2011

Beirut, Lebanon

On November 28, 2011, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) recognized fifty-one North Lebanon Water Establishment (NLWE) technical staff members who successfully completed a training program on pump station operation, safety, records keeping, and maintenance.  This training will help avoid equipment damage and failures of NLWE pump stations, improve efficiency and effectiveness, and reduce maintenance costs and number of work site injuries.

This training falls under the $34 million U.S.-funded Lebanon Water and Wastewater Sector Support (LWWSS) program, which aims to move toward safe and reliable drinking water, improve water services, and combat water pollution.  The operational and managerial training helps NLWE operate as a commercial entity capable of providing improved, quality services to its approximately 103,000 customers.

LWWSS is one of three USAID funded water programs to improve governance in Lebanon’s water sector.   These other programs include the $18 million Small Villages Wastewater Treatment Systems project that is reducing pollution in the upper Litani River Basin, and the $10.5 million Litani River Basin Management Support project that is assisting the Litani River Authority transform into a River Basin Agency.
