USAID Celebrates International Women's Day
March 8, 2004
Countries around the world are celebrating International Women's Day, an occasion to honor the varied accomplishments of women and to reaffirm the commitment to promote and protect the human rights of women worldwide. Equal opportunity for women and freedom from fear are non-negotiable demands of human dignity.
The United States was one of the first major donors to recognize that lasting results would not be realized unless both men and women were full and equal partners in the development process, and USAID has always been fully committed to this philosophy. With the help of US foreign assistance, men, women and children around the world are healthier, better educated and more prosperous today than ever before.
With the help of the United States, Kurdish women are reading for the first time in years, Afghan women are now helping support their families again, women in Guinea are starting their very own co-ops, and women in Serbia now detecting cancer much earlier than before.
It is through the efforts of USAID that these and countless other successes have been achieved on behalf of women throughout the world. USAID has compiled a sampling of stories highlighting achievements of women around the world.
