ACTIVITIES

Project Name:

Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP)

Duration:

2008 - 20012

Geographic Scope:

Worldwide

Implementing Agency:

Government of India, State governments of Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand

DESCRIPTION:

MCHIP’s goal is to accelerate the reduction of maternal and child mortality in 30 priority countries through the introduction, development, and scale-up of high-impact maternal, newborn, family planning, and child health interventions (MNCH). The program works with the Government of India's flagship programs: the National Rural Health Mission; Integrated Child Development Services Schemes; the emergent National Urban Health Mission; the National Immunization Program; as well as with state governments, WHO, UNICEF, CARE, CORE, USAID/India's Health of Urban Poor (HUP) Project and other USAID partners. It focuses on control of vaccine preventable diseases; newborn health, maternal health, and family planning. Building on USAID’s program experience and lessons learned, MCHIP addresses major causes of mortality, including malnutrition, by implementing high impact interventions based on the country context and using global and local data. It uses innovative program approaches to achieve country MNCH goals including performance-based financing, community insurance schemes, and public-private partnerships. MCHIP continues to support the Indian Nursing Council’s (INC) and Government of India (GoI) comprehensive initiative to strengthen and dramatically expand the foundation of pre-service education at the national level. The project is supporting GoI’s strategy of addressing the unmet need for postpartum family planning services through supporting routine integration in MNCH services and revitalizing the Immediate Postpartum Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IPPIUCD). MCHIP is supporting the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), the USAID bilateral health programs, and the new National Newborn Care and Resuscitation Initiative in their efforts to strengthen and expand access to essential newborn care, and teach basic resuscitation techniques.
