Overview

India’s Development Challenge

Over the past 50 years India has made tremendous development gains. In recent years its economy has grown at rates of 9% or more, making it one of the fastest growing economies in the world. At the same time, India continues to face many development challenges. Nearly half of the country’s children are malnourished; one of the largest segments of its billion plus population – youth – struggles to find quality education and job training; and approximately 700 million Indians live on less than $2 per day. The future will also bring additional challenges such as climate change. With one sixth of the world’s population and one third of the world’s poor, India’s economic and social progress is critical to achieving the global Millennium Development Goals. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting India in achieving its development goals through programs in health, education, economic growth, agriculture, women’s rights, energy, and environment.
