Critical repairs are underway at the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul / Sinan Paşa Mosque to restore structural integrity to this important Famagusta monument and to complete emergency repairs to stonework which has become dangerous to visitors and passersby.

The 14th century building suffers from two major structural problems: nearly non-existent earthquake resistance and water intrusion. Masonry work is needed to repair the structural problems, including loose stones and cracks. All interventions will follow established international guidelines and philosophies for historic preservation and will maintain the current appearance of the building.

The emergency conservation work at Sts. Peter and Paul/Sinan Pasa Mosque is being undertaken by the Supporting Activities that Value the Environment (SAVE) project, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Since 2005, SAVE has strived to foster respect and protection of Cyprus' shared heritage as a way to build bridges of understanding. Appreciating Cyprus' multicultural past is one way of ensuring a more peaceful future. SAVE is working with local and international experts and in consultation with all stakeholders in order to ensure that this historic building is better protected and preserved for generations to come. Construction services are being provided to SAVE by Halken Insaat, a local Famagusta firm. Structural engineering oversight is being provided by the international firm of GBGeotechnics, Ltd. (GBG). Work begins in September 2010 and is scheduled for completion in December 2010.

SAVE works to build local capacity to better protect and manage Cyprus' valuable natural and cultural resources. Like all USAID-funded programs in Cyprus, SAVE is aimed at facilitating reunification of the island, through including better protection and management of the island's cultural resources.
