Under the auspices of the Collaborative Media Initiative and the USAID-funded Cyprus Community Media Center, the "Collaboration in Media" conference in the heart of divided Nicosia strengthened dialogue on innovative approaches to media in bilingual, conflict settings. Using case studies and best practices from Europe and the Balkans, media representatives evaluated methods to strengthen conflict resolution and make policy contributions that will serve the interests of a reunited Cyprus.
Specifically, the participants looked at how media can merge audiences and address language differences; how journalists can collaborate across dividing lines to build bridges in conflict zones; and how federal media can serve to unite, rather than divide. Beyond those working in the media and journalism, the event attracted policy makers and opinion leaders as well as civil society activists from both sides. The event was inaugurated by Lisa Buttenheim, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus.
Over the last several years, USAID has supported the Cyprus Community Media Center (www.cypruscommunitymedia.org) in its work to strengthen the media's ability to play a positive role in reconciliation. This support has been provided through the United Nations Development Program—Action for Cooperation and Trust. For more information on UNDP ACT, please visit http://www.undp-act.org.
