Civil Society Fairs Attract Over 10,000 People

April - May 2011

Implemented by the Management Centre and the NGO Support Centre and supported by the USAID-funded UNDP Action for Cooperation and Trust, ENGAGE organized three regional Fairs in April and May.
The three fairs attracted nearly 10,000 visitors and widespread media coverage, including special reports on all major television channels.

Across the globe and increasingly in Cyprus, civil society organizations (CSOs) are having an impact on social, economic and political causes. CSOs mobilize people and resources to protect the environment; advance human rights; promote public health; and improve standards of living. In Cyprus, the ENGAGE—Do Your Part for Peace project is working to strengthen the capacity of local CSOs to continue to do these kinds of things as well as play a role in the reconciliation process that is essential to lasting peace.

Using music, dance, cultural activities, and games to create a festive atmosphere, the three fairs attracted nearly 10,000 visitors and widespread media coverage, including special reports on all major television channels.

Implemented by the Management Centre and the NGO Support Centre and supported by the USAID-funded UNDP Action for Cooperation and Trust, ENGAGE organized three regional Fairs in April and May. In addition to a day-long fair in the heart of the divided capital of Nicosia, forty CSOs from both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities collaborated on fairs in the coastal cities of Famagusta and Limassol. Using music, dance, cultural activities, and games to create a festive atmosphere, the three fairs attracted nearly 10,000 visitors and widespread media coverage, including special reports on all major television channels. The fairs were a unique opportunity for the public to find out more about the good work of these local organizations, diverse in their interests but united in their commitment to Cyprus' future.
