NGOs Go on the Road:

Over 5,000 Attend Famagusta ENGAGE Fair for Civil Society Organizations

April 16, 2011

Over 5,000 people visited stalls set up by CSOs active on island.
It was a unique opportunity for the public to find out more about the good work of these local organizations.

Across the globe and in Cyprus, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have become increasingly influential. More and more, they are recognizing their potential impact on social, economic and political activities. NGOs can and do address a host of issues, including, but certainly not limited to, women’s rights, environmental protection, human rights and trafficking, economic development, political issues and health care. In numerous countries, NGOs have led the way in democratization, in battling diseases and illnesses, in promoting and enforcing human rights and in increasing standards of living. In Cyprus, the ENGAGE—Do Your Part for Peace project is working to strengthen the capacity of local civil society organizations (CSO) to play a role in the reconciliation process that is essential to lasting peace.

ENGAGE organized the first of three regional CSO Fairs in Famagusta on April 16, 2011.
In Cyprus, the ENGAGE—Do Your Part for Peace project is working to strengthen the capacity of local civil society organizations (CSO) to play a role in the reconciliation process that is essential to lasting peace.

Implemented by the Management Centre and the NGO Support Centre and supported by the USAID-funded UNDP Action for Cooperation and Trust, ENGAGE organized the first of three regional CSO Fairs in Famagusta on April 16, 2011. Over 5,000 people visited stalls set up by CSOs active on island. It was a unique opportunity for the public to find out more about the good work of these local organizations, diverse in their interests but united in their commitment to Cyprus' future. ENGAGE has plans to organize similar CSO Fairs in both Nicosia and Limassol in May 2011.
