Across the globe and in Cyprus, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have become increasingly influential. More and more, they are recognizing their potential impact on social, economic and political activities. NGOs can and do address a host of issues, including, but certainly not limited to, women’s rights, environmental protection, human rights and trafficking, economic development, political issues and health care. In numerous countries, NGOs have led the way in democratization, in battling diseases and illnesses, in promoting and enforcing human rights and in increasing standards of living. In Cyprus, the ENGAGE—Do Your Part for Peace project is working to strengthen the capacity of local civil society organizations (CSO) to play a role in the reconciliation process that is essential to lasting peace. |
