Managing Shared Spaces; Building A Shared Future

April 13, 2011

The President of the Union of Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB) Mr. Ahmet Omer Cagnan and the two coordinators of the Participatory Development Project (PDP) made remarks at the event.
Many participants from both sides of the divide attended the event.

On April 13, 2011, the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK) and the Union of Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB) came together to launch their shared initiative to promote participation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in reconciliation initiatives. Besides deepening ETEK and KTMMOB's cooperation as the largest professional associations on the island, the Participatory Development Project (PDP) will engage people on both sides of Cyprus' dividing Green Line in the planning of shared spaces. With an emphasis on cultural heritage and environmental initiatives, PDP will promote social inclusion in decision making not just on quality of life issues, but also in the larger reconciliation process. PDP's activities are supported by USAID through the UNDP Action for Cooperation and Trust program.

Acting Program Manager for UNDP-ACT Tzvetan Zafirov, KTMMOB President Mr. Ahmet Omer Cagnan, USAID Representative Mr. Alan Davis, ETEK President Christos Efthyvoulou came together to celebrate the PDP launch.
ETEK President Christos Efthyvoulou speaking to the press, which showed great interest to the event.

ETEK President Christos Efthyvoulou told the members of the press present at the launch event that PDP is "another effort of Cypriot engineers, along with others, to contribute towards the cementing of trust and mutual understanding". KTMMOB's President Ahmet Omer Cagnan added that through PDP's advocacy campaign, "we hope that society will embrace this approach for further development" of the island.
