Cyprus' multicultural past provides a common—and interesting—reference point for those working to forge a more peaceful future for the divided island. In January and February 2011, guided tours through the historic walled cities of Nicosia and Famagusta provided educators and students from both sides the opportunity to find out more about the past as well as about each other. Together with the POST Research Institute, the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Teachers' Platform "United Cyprus" has organized "Tours for Peace" aimed at improving the public's understanding of historical places and how they can be used to spark constructive dialogue about controversial issues. Over one hundred people participated in the inaugural tours in each city. "Tours for Peace" was made possible in part by funding through "ENGAGE", which is supported by USAID through the UNDP Action for Cooperation and Trust. |
