Program Successes: Trafficking in Persons

USAID and its partners are committed to curbing human trafficking. Between October 2009 through September 2010:

·         USAID strengthened the capacity of 332 law enforcement officers and public prosecutors, including lawyers, to improve understanding and cooperation in dealing with TIP cases.

 

·         USAID trained 214 government officials from the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training to help migrant workers reduce their vulnerability abroad.

 

 

·         Trainings were provided to seven representatives of Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies on improving their roles in ensuring safe migration and reducing the risk of labor trafficking.

 

·         USAID trained over 1000 local elected officials, students,teachers and civil society representatives on protecting vulnerable community members from falling into trafficking traps

 

·         80 journalists attended USAID-supported informational sessions on protecting vulnerable community members from falling into trafficking traps.

 

·         A total of 386 migrant workers received training during their pre-departure period that enhanced their confidence and capacity to avoid becoming victims of trafficking.

 

·         752 TIP survivors (350 of whom were women) received USG assistance to support their safe reintegration into society.  They received support services such as safe shelter, health care, psycho-social counseling and employment training.

 

·         USAID provided support to 302 male TIP survivors, mostly victims of labor trafficking.

 

·         USAID provided training to 72 shelter home staff to ensure minimum standards of care in shelter homes.
