Mission and Goals
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is the relief and
development assistance arm of the U.S. Government. Its work supports
long-term and equitable economic growth and advances U.S. foreign policy
objectives by supporting:
·
economic growth, agriculture and trade;
·
global health; and,
·
democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance.
USAID assists Bosnia and Herzegovina in
achieving its potential to become a peaceful, democratic,
forward-looking, prosperous country. Our programs help develop the rule
of law and market-oriented economy serving the interests of BiH
citizens. USAID strives to help BiH become a welcomed member of the
European Union.
USAID’s Assistance History in BiH
Since the opening of the U.S. Embassy in BiH in 1994, the U. S.
Government, through USAID, has spent nearly $1.5 billion to improve the
lives of citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and help lay the foundations
for a bright future. From 1995 – 1999, USAID spent over $700 million in
post-conflict reconstruction projects, including repair of large
infrastructure. From 2000 – 2005, the Mission provided $340 million for
institution building activities to advance BiH toward a democratic and
market-oriented economy. Since 2006, USAID/BiH’s projects have focused
on transformational development in economic growth, democracy and
governance, and peace and security.
