In a ceremony attended by Cynthia Efird, the U.S. Ambassador to Angola, together with Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) President Dr. Emidio Pinheiro, the new Jango Juvenil (or youth center) in the municipality of Caala, Huambo, was officially inaugurated on January 25th, 2007. In an energetic ceremony, speeches by the two, together with representatives of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Municipal Administrator of Caala, were interspersed with musical performances by local youth.
The center's role in HIV/AIDS prevention among the youth was highlighted in the remarks. A plaque with the BFA logo was unveiled, and branding at the youth center identified USAID support for the youth center program, implemented by local NGO partners of Population Services International (PSI). Refreshments were served in the ceremony, followed by a walkthrough of the center's classrooms.
BFA is an important corporate partner of USAID, providing $400,000 per year for three years to support youth centers in Viana, Lubango, Cabinda, Caala and a new center scheduled to open soon in Ondjiva, Cunene province.
