Research and Development of an Official Ecuadorian Sign Language Dictionary

Funding Amount: $282,450
This project focuses on the development of a research-based sign language dictionary for the advancement of Ecuadorian Sign Language. Beneficiaries of the dictionary include deaf adults and children, family members with deaf children, teachers, sign language interpreters, and local authorities.
Key activities:
- Establish a National Sign Language Committee responsible for researching and documenting the linguistics of Ecuadorian Sign Language, and then developing the dictionary.
- Capture visual registers of signs using video and illustration, and print materials.
- Train deaf associations and public service providers (i.e., schools, health clinics, etc.) on how to use the completed dictionary for communication purposes.
Institutional Strengthening of Ecuador's National Federation of the Blind (FENCE)
Implementing Partners: Federación Nacional de Ciegos del Ecuador (FENCE)
Funding Period: September 2010 – September 2012
Funding Amount: $41,420
This project focuses on strengthening the institutional capacity of ten regional federations of the blind in Ecuador.
Key activities:
- Produce training materials using Braille and audio (totaling 1,750 copies of manuals).
- Train regional federations on management and administrative skills.
- Train members of regional federations on the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.
