Doha Financing for Development International Conference

Logo of the Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development to Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus Henrietta Fore, Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance and Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) will lead the U.S. government delegation to the Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development to Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus in Doha, Qatar from November 29 - December 2, 2008. In addition to over 251 representatives of government from 47 United Nations member states, the conference will be attended by leaders and representatives from civil society organizations, intergovernmental organizations, and international financial institutions.

At the upcoming Doha Financing for Development International Conference, the United States seeks to reinvigorate the international community's commitment to good governance as a critical ingredient to economic growth. Since 2002, the United States has sought to build on the firm foundations for development established in Monterrey to improve aid effectiveness by embracing the Paris Declaration and Accra Action Agenda that supports increased partner country ownership and a strategic approach to development - tied to verifiable results - as a precondition of any increases in donor contributions.

The United States approaches the Doha Conference firm in its support for the new beginning for international development assistance that Monterrey inaugurated in 2002. It believes that foreign assistance can play a catalytic role in advancing development by promoting good governance and private sector-led growth. It also believes assistance should be tied to measurable results in order to maximize aid effectiveness and sustain public commitments from donors and partner nations alike.
