Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for Africa
Sharon Cromer has served as USAID's Senior Deputy Assistant
Administrator for Africa since May 2010. She is responsible for overseeing
operations in the Bureau for Africa, which manages a complex portfolio of
programs of more than $6.3 billion in FY 2009.
A member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, Ms. Cromer has more than
20 years of experience in international humanitarian and development
assistance. Prior to her appointment to the Africa Bureau, Ms. Cromer
served in a temporary assignment as Assistant Administrator for the
Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance, and then

Management in September 2009.
In July 2007, Ms. Cromer was named Director of the USAID Mission in
Nigeria, which, in 2008, implemented a $500-million assistance program in
one of the largest, most important U.S. allies in Africa. The mission's work
included projects in economic growth, education, and good governance,
but concentrated on health—improving maternal and child health, fighting
malnutrition, and combating malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Before
coming to Nigeria, Ms. Cromer had served as Director of the USAID
Mission in Ghana since July 2002. From 1986 to 1997, she served in
Pakistan, Cote D'Ivoire, and Senegal. Following these consecutive tours,
she assumed the role of Deputy Director to USAID/Indonesia.
Born in Washington, DC, Ms. Cromer is a graduate of Barnard College at
Columbia University and has a law degree from Georgetown University.
