Biography of Dr. Bijnan Acharya

Dr. Bijnan Acharya

Dr. Bijnan Acharya was the Environment and Forestry Program Specialist for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Katmandu, Nepal.

Dr. Acharya received his PhD from Leiden University, The Netherlands, with his dissertation on Forest Biodiversity Assessment. His early career was with the Government of Nepal's Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation. His career at USAID started in 1999.

He played a key role in USAID's efforts to strengthen Nepal's internationally renowned policy for community managed forests and buffer zones through user groups. Dr. Archarya's efforts were instrumental in ensuring the sustainable use of Nepal's rich natural resources while promoting democratic principals and transparency. He was the Mission's technical expert on all environment and natural resource related issues and worked closely with high level officials in the Government of Nepal, the United States and other diplomatic missions.

Dr. Acharya is survived by his wife and two children.
